What Actually Counts as a Heavyweight Hoodie

Heavyweight has no legal threshold. What gsm really means, how the figure gets bent, ounces to grams, and what to ask before you buy.

Every brand selling a hoodie calls it heavyweight. Most are wrong. The word has no legal meaning and no agreed threshold, so it lands on 280gsm jersey and 500gsm loopback alike. The customer finds out which about three washes in. There's a real number under the marketing.

The number that settles the argument

Fabric weight is grams per square metre: a square metre of cloth, on a scale. More yarn in the same area means denser, more opaque, longer lasting.

Rough bands, cotton sweatshirting:

  • 240 to 300gsm. Light. A long sleeve tee with a hood on it. Translucent at the elbows within a year.
  • 300 to 380gsm. Mid weight. The high street default, and most of what gets sold as heavyweight.
  • 380 to 450gsm. Genuinely heavy. Holds a shape when it lands on a chair. Warm without a shell.
  • 450gsm and up. Serious. Slow to dry, expensive to ship, and it outlives most of a wardrobe.

How the figure gets taken

A die cuts a disc of known area out of the roll, it goes on a fine scale, and the reading scales up. Cut several discs across the width and they won't agree: knitted cloth isn't uniform, and finishing pulls it about. The printed gsm is an average. A few grams between mills is noise. Fifty is a different cloth.

Where the number gets bent

Plenty of brands quote a figure. Fewer quote the same thing twice.

  • Garment weight standing in for fabric weight. An 800g hoodie is the whole thing on a scale, trims included. Size it up and the number climbs without the cloth changing.
  • Ounces flattering the cloth. Twelve looks small next to four hundred.
  • Measured before or after wash. Cloth off the roll reads lighter than the same cloth washed and shrunk back. Only one of those gets worn.

Ounces to gsm, in your head

One ounce per square yard is roughly 34gsm, so multiply by 34. 8oz is around 270gsm, 10oz around 340gsm, 12oz around 410gsm, 14oz around 475gsm. A 12oz hoodie and a 410gsm hoodie are the same cloth, described twice.

What to ask when the number isn't printed

A brand that knows its supplier answers in a sentence.

  1. Fabric weight or finished garment weight?
  2. Which size was weighed?
  3. Before or after washing? Ask for the finished figure.

Vagueness is an answer too. Fibre content and care symbols have to be on the sewn-in label. Weight doesn't, so it appears by choice.

What the extra weight buys

Density. More fibre between the wearer and whatever wears it out, so abrasion takes longer. Drape too: light sweatshirting clings and creases, heavy cloth falls. Opacity: thin cotton greys out, heavy cotton holds colour.

Heavy and warm aren't the same spec

Weight gets read as warmth. Close, not the same. Cloth keeps heat by holding still air against the body, so what counts is how much air the knit traps and how easily wind pushes through. Density helps with the second and works against the first.

Two hoodies at the same gsm read differently on the same cold morning. Weight is one input to warmth, not the measure.

What the number doesn't cover

Gsm describes the body panel, not the parts that give out first.

  • Ribbing. Heavy body, light cuffs and hem is common, and stretched cuffs show long before the body wears through.
  • Seams. More weight, more load on the stitching. Flat, well anchored seams matter more at 450gsm than at 300gsm.
  • Yarn and knit. Two hoodies can read 420gsm and wear nothing alike.

The hood is where the weight lands

Two or three layers of the same cloth hang off the neck. That's what makes a heavy hood stand instead of flop, and what makes it pull.

  • A lined hood doubles the number in one place. Two layers at the neck, and the slowest part to dry.
  • The neck seam carries all of it. Every gram hangs off one line of stitching, wet or dry.
  • Eyelets sit in the thickest cloth on the piece, and the cord pulls on that hole for years.

Two hoodies, one number, different cloth

Weight says how much yarn sits in the panel, not how it became fabric. Sweatshirting comes two ways.

  • Loopback. The inside face is left as raw loops. It sits off the skin and moves air, and doesn't flatten the way a nap does.
  • Brushed fleece. The same loops cut open and raised into a nap. Softer in the shop, and the nap compresses with wear, so a brushed 400gsm hoodie feels thinner at a year old.

The number says nothing about the fibre

A 400gsm cotton hoodie and a 400gsm cotton-polyester one read the same on the spec sheet and wear apart from the first wash.

  • Cotton. Takes up water and holds it. Softens with wear, shrinks unless the cloth was washed before cutting.
  • Polyester in the blend. Holds shape and cuts shrinkage. It carries less water, so the same weight dries quicker.
  • Elastane in the rib. A few per cent so the cuff and hem snap back. Trim, not body, which is why the two age differently.

Shrinkage pushes the number up

Shrinking cloth doesn't remove yarn. It packs the same yarn into less area, so a shrunk hoodie reads heavier per square metre than it did on the roll. That's the gap between a pre-wash figure and a post-wash one.

  • The gain is worthless. A denser panel on a shorter body isn't an upgrade, and length goes first.
  • Cloth washed before cutting has taken most of it already, though pre-shrunk doesn't mean it stops moving.
  • Heat and agitation do it. A hot wash and a tumble dry do in one cycle what cold washing takes years to.

Heavy cloth needs breaking in

A heavy hoodie is at its worst in its first hour. Dense cloth comes off the roll stiff, and a fold sets harder than it would in jersey.

  • The cuffs grip first. New rib settles to the wrist over a few wears. Slack on day one leaves it nowhere to go.
  • Fold creases are stubborn. More fibre holds a crease longer, and a wash and a flat dry beats pressing.
  • The body loosens as it warms. Wear and body heat relax the loops, so the fit at nine isn't the fit at six.

Judge it after a wash, not in the hallway.

Gsm is a day one figure

Cloth gets weighed at the mill, before anyone has worn it. The panel keeps its weight, not its surface. It flattens and pills at the same friction points every time: underarm first, then under a bag strap.

Weight in the wet

Rain reads the number from the other side. More cotton takes on more water, so a panel that felt substantial dry carries a load the pattern wasn't cut for.

  • The body drops. Wet cloth hangs longer than dry, and the hood pulls harder on the neck seam until it dries.
  • The thick parts dry last. Cuffs, hem and a lined hood give the water up long after the body has.
  • Nothing sheds. A knit holds water where it lands rather than running it off, a separate question from whether it keeps the rain off at all.

A soaked 500gsm hoodie on a thin hanger puts that load through the shoulders for hours. Dry it flat.

Weight changes the fit, not just the feel

Heavy cloth sits away from the body, so 450gsm reads roomier through the chest and squarer at the shoulder than 300gsm on the same pattern. Size letters mean nothing across brands. Centimetres travel.

  • Chest, flat, pit to pit. Double it and compare against one already owned.
  • Body length, high shoulder to hem. Nothing rides up to rescue a short body.
  • Shoulder, seam to seam. A dropped shoulder moves differently from a set-in one, and the chest figure won't say which.

When the lighter cloth wins

Heavy isn't automatically right. A 480gsm hoodie is warmer than anyone wants in June, and a 300gsm hoodie is the better tool under a shell or when it has to dry overnight. Plenty of people who think they want 500gsm want 380gsm and a coat.

How to check before you buy

Online, the gsm should be in the spec. If it isn't, ask. In person, four tests take ten seconds.

  1. Hold it to a light. If a hand shows through, it's light cloth.
  2. Pinch the hem and roll it. Heavy loopback rolls into a firm cord, thin jersey collapses.
  3. Lift it by the shoulders. It should hang, not float.
  4. Stretch a cuff and let go. If it doesn't come back, the rib was bought cheaper than the cloth.
